SIS40313 Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation

Depending on the specialisations chosen, this qualification provides the skills and knowledge for an individual to be competent in:

Guiding outdoor recreation activities in an uncontrolled environment

It requires technical knowledge of the outdoor recreation activity to be transferred to allow individuals to safely participate in the outdoor activity. It does not provide the skills and knowledge to impart the required level of technical knowledge and expertise to allow participants to independently undertake outdoor recreation activities.

A guide operating in an uncontrolled environment has the skills, knowledge and experience that enable them to work independently within a variety of settings and contexts that may be complex and non-routine.

Instructing outdoor recreation skills

An instructor has the skills, knowledge and experience to facilitate skill transfer or development to clients in order that they may participate independently (or with minimal supervision) in outdoor activities. This requires the instructor to be able to:

  • transfer required technical skills and knowledge to participants
  • apply a variety of appropriate instructional strategies
  • critique participants technique
  • assess participants skill and knowledge acquisition during and at the end of a program or session
  • In all cases those with this qualification would be managing expected and unexpected situations with considerable autonomy. Leadership, guidance and supervision are involved when organising activities of self and others, as well as contributing to technical solutions of a non-routine or contingency nature. Work would be performed in field locations with varied contexts requiring contingency planning and in differing environments such as water-based, dry land and mountainous terrains, using a diverse range of equipment.

Scouting requirements for Guides and Instructors

The adventurous activity Guides are typically the people delivering adventurous activities to youth members. To be in charge of adventurous activities, all Guides must hold specified Units of Competency, plus the Units of Competency identified for the relevant adventurous activity in the current version of the Scouts Australia Adventurous Activities Training & Assessment Matrix

The Instructors are members of the National Training Team who provide training in adventurous activities. To be considered for an Instructor appointment, all Instructors must have completed Wood Badge Training and hold specified Units of Competency, plus the Units of Competency identified for the relevant adventurous activity in the current version of the Scouts Australia Adventurous Activities Training & Assessment Matrix

The table below indicates which Units of Competency are required for the Scouts Adventurous Activity Guides/ Instructors and how that aligns with the Units of Competency from the Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation. Scouting in Australia does not require anyone to hold a Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation, however any person who has obtained two (2) adventurous activity areas as an Instructor or as a Guide in uncontrolled environments will usually only have six (6) to eight (8) Units of Competency remaining to complete the full Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation.

Scouting pathway

Any member of Scouts Australia who has sufficient evidence can apply for Recognition of Prior Learning.  The enrolment Process is outlined on the SAIT Qualifications page. Experiences and learning received by Youth and Adult members across Australia, has been mapped and aligns to the requirements of the Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation.  A typical pathway within Scouts Australia, that enables collection of valid evidence is:

After completing your enrolment with the Scouts Australia Institute of Training (SAIT), a SAIT assessor will be assigned to you and they will assess your evidence. They may ask for further evidence or have a conversation with you to gather further information about your current experiences.

Upon successfully completing your Recognition of Prior Learning assessment, you will receive a Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation (SIS40313).
